For new Muslims & those exploring

You're not alone on this journey.

Whether you just took your shahada, are thinking about it, or are simply curious — Masjid Tawfeeq is here to walk with you. No pressure. No judgment. Just support, at your pace.

The basics

Three things at the heart of it all

Islam isn't complicated at its core. Three simple ideas hold everything together.

One God

Muslims believe in one God — Allah — the same God of Ibrahim, Musa, and Isa. No partners, no images, no intermediaries. Just a direct, personal relationship with your Creator.

Prophets & the Quran

We follow the final Prophet, Muhammad ﷺ, and the Quran — God's literal word, preserved unchanged for over 1,400 years. It's a guide, a mercy, and a conversation with your Lord.

The Five Pillars

Declaration of faith, prayer, charity, fasting in Ramadan, and pilgrimage to Makkah. Five simple practices that anchor a life of gratitude and purpose.

Your first steps

Where to start — in your own time

There's no rush. Take one step at a time. We're here when you're ready for each one.

1

Say the Shahada

The declaration of faith: "Ash-hadu an la ilaha illa Allah, wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan rasul Allah." Say it with sincerity and you're a Muslim. We can witness it with you.

2

Learn Wudu & Prayer

Start with one prayer a day. Our New Muslim class walks you through the movements, the words, and the meaning — slowly, together, in a private and comfortable setting.

3

Begin reading the Quran

You don't need Arabic to start. Read a few verses a day in English, in your own language. The Quran speaks directly to the heart — one ayah at a time.

4

Join the community

You're not meant to do this alone. Come to a Friday prayer, a New Muslim gathering, or just stop by for tea. Masjid is where the journey becomes a shared one.

Your first visit

What to expect when you walk in

Nobody expects you to know what you're doing. Here's the practical stuff — so you can just focus on being there.

What to wear

Dress modestly and comfortably — loose clothes that cover your arms and legs. No special outfit needed. Come as you are.

Where to park & enter

Park in the main lot and come through the front entrance. Text or call us when you arrive and someone will come meet you.

Shoes off inside

We remove our shoes before entering the prayer hall. There are shelves by the door — no need to bring anything, just slip them off.

Who to ask for

Ask for the New Muslim coordinator or any volunteer. Let them know it's your first visit — they'll walk you through everything.

Do you have to pray?

No. You're welcome to sit, watch, and just take it in. Participation is always your choice, and no one will pressure you.

Bringing someone

Friends, spouses, and family are always welcome. Bring whoever helps you feel comfortable — you don't have to come alone.

Sisters are warmly welcome

We have a dedicated sisters' entrance, a private women's prayer hall, and a sisters-only contact for any questions you'd prefer to ask privately. You never need a male family member to accompany you.

Common questions

Things new Muslims often ask

If your question isn't here, reach out — we'd love to answer it personally.

Not at all. Millions of Muslims around the world don't speak Arabic. You'll learn a few short phrases for prayer over time, and we'll help you with pronunciation. Understanding comes before fluency — and understanding can happen in any language.

Almost no one does when they start — and that's completely normal. Start with one prayer, learn the movements slowly, and don't stress about perfection. God sees the effort, not the polish.

Our Thursday New Muslim class walks through prayer step-by-step in a private, comfortable setting.

Absolutely not — and if anyone ever makes you feel that way, tell us. The Prophet ﷺ taught that gentleness is a mark of faith, and every Muslim you'll meet was once a beginner at something.

New Muslims are honored in our community. You're not expected to know everything. You're just welcomed.

This is one of the hardest parts of the journey, and you don't have to carry it alone. Islam teaches us to honor our parents and be kind to family even when they disagree with us.

Our Imam and mentors have walked with many new Muslims through this exact situation. Reach out for confidential support.

There's no ceremony required — saying the declaration sincerely, with intention, is enough. But many new Muslims choose to do it with witnesses at the masjid, surrounded by community.

Email us and we'll arrange a quiet, private ceremony whenever you're ready. It can be just you and the Imam, or your whole family — your choice.

Nothing. Charity (zakat) is only required on savings above a certain threshold, once a year. There's no membership fee, no dues, no minimum giving. The masjid exists to serve you, not the other way around.

A little vocabulary

Words you'll hear around the masjid

No need to memorize anything. Just so they feel familiar the first time you hear them.

Allah (AL-lah)

The Arabic word for God — the same word Arabic-speaking Christians and Jews use. Not a different deity, just that language's word for the One God.

Alhamdulillah (al-ham-doo-LIL-lah)

"All praise is due to God." Said in gratitude, or simply in response to "How are you?"

Insha'Allah (in-SHA-al-lah)

"If God wills." Said about future plans, big and small — from "I'll see you tomorrow, insha'Allah" to "One day I'd like to make Hajj, insha'Allah."

Masjid (MAS-jid)

A mosque; literally "place of prostration." Where Muslims gather for prayer, learning, and community.

Imam (ee-MAM)

The person who leads prayer and serves as a community leader and teacher. Not a priest — Muslims have no clergy between themselves and God.

Salah (sa-LAH)

The ritual prayer performed five times a day. Includes specific movements and recitations, and takes just a few minutes each time.

Wudu (WOO-doo)

The brief washing of hands, face, arms, and feet before prayer. Takes about a minute, and there are dedicated sinks at the masjid for it.

Shahada (sha-HA-da)

The declaration of faith. Saying it sincerely — with understanding and intention — is what makes someone a Muslim.

Subhanallah (sub-HA-nal-lah)

"Glory be to God." Said in awe or amazement — a beautiful sunset, a profound verse, a moment that takes your breath away.

Salaam (sa-LAAM)

"Peace." The greeting Muslims give each other: "As-salaamu alaykum" — "Peace be upon you." Feel free to try it out; you'll get a warm reply.
